Track

Pack 336 and Pack 728 share ownership of the pinewood derby track. We alternate years for storage of the track. Since Pack 728 stored the track after the 2007 pinewood derby, they will set it up in 2008 and will have the early racing time. Pack 336 will then disassemble the track after the later race time and store it until 2009. The track uses the Fast Track K2 Timer with parts available here.

Scale

The pinewood derby scales are stored in a box with the track. The scales need to be calibrated each year. Since our scales measures tenths of an ounce, it is possible that cars will meet the weight with the pack scale but then be overweight if at the district level where the scales weigh in grams.

Awards

Trophies are given to the top 3 finishers in each rank (combined time from 4 heats). Awards are also given for the most patriotic, the best paint job, and the best Cub Scout theme. Trophies are typically ordered by the Awards Coordinator or another volunteer and can be ordered from Lakeville Trophy or Certificates Unlimited.

Race Day

Each car is assigned a number during weigh-in from 1 to 60. This is used to ease getting the correct cars ready for each heat. Second year Webelos are asked to help run the derby by getting the cars set up for each heat. Each car will race in 4 heats, once in each lane. All times are recorded automatically and sent to a computer running special software. Results and awards are presented at the end of the races.

Racing Software

Pack 336 uses the Grand Prix software (Ver 6.0.7) to conduct the races. It is available for download here. The Pack 336 software license key can be obtained by contacting the webmaster. This software automates the entire race, ensuring that each car races in 4 heats against different cars each time, once in each lane. The times from the 4 heats are combined to determine your standing against others of your rank, so you are not penalized if you were always in a "fast" heat.

Here are the official rules and district race information.
